Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) became a member of ICLEI this year, one of the world’s largest local government initiatives. Representing IMM, Mr. Barbaros Büyüksağnak, Head of Foreign Relations Department, attended the ICLEI 2024 World Congress held in São Paulo, Brazil on 18-21 June.

Delivering a speech at the closing ceremony of the Congress, Mr. Barbaros Büyüksağnak emphasized the importance of ICLEI and said that together they will take concrete steps to develop collaborations and projects to build a greener and more sustainable future. Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, Mayor of Malmö, the new President of ICLEI, congratulated Istanbul, stating that Istanbul will add strength to this initiative.

Mr. Büyüksağnak also delivered a speech at the event organized within the scope of the congress titled ‘Tomorrow’s Cities Today: Megacities Driving Global Change’ organized within the scope of the congress. During the panel, he gave information about Istanbul’s ongoing earthquake resilience initiatives.
